Scattering Well

By Jeff Brink, December 19, 2023

Faithful Christians are in weekly rhythms of gathering and scattering. We gather on Sundays with fellow believers in our local church body to worship, study the bible, and become better equipped as saints (Ephesians 4:11-13). Then, we scatter into the world to do good and share the gospel.

However, the world has pushed the narrative that everyone must check their faith at the door when heading off to work. And much of society has bought it. From the book Monday Morning Atheist, “It’s an easy thing to believe in God but then work like He doesn’t exist — switching God off. You are most likely struggling with Monday Morning Atheism right now without even knowing it.” Because we spend over half of our waking hours (during the week) at our jobs, it is important to avoid this compartmentalizing and instead integrate our faith and work.

Barna, a Christian research organization, defines an important group of people -the “integrators” of faith and work. These people believe strongly that their work serves the Lord, they look to make a difference in the world, and they want to help shape the culture of their workplace. According to their statistics, integrating faith into the workplace gives Christians a greater perception of calling, stewardship of their skills, better relationships, and confidence in their future.  These “Integrators” know Christ is not outside the workplace looking in. He is present and active at all times. This study shows that “integrators” thrive because they know their fulfillment is in more than their work –fulfillment and joy come from Christ. He loves to see us working with integrity, joy, and determination.

One of the many things I love about my church, Christ Covenant in Atlanta, is the emphasis placed on developing and equipping members to scatter well and live out the Great Commission and Great Commandment in ALL areas of our lives, including the workplace. Developing saints (the idea of training believers to serve God here on earth) to scatter well with complete integration.

So, what does scattering well look like in your workplace and network?

  • Glorify God through your work (remember God is our ultimate boss)
  • Model Jesus in your relationships – selflessly love and serve others
  • Strive to reflect God’s glory to the world in every situation
  • Use your spheres of influence to point to Christ and share His impact on your life
  • Integrate your faith into marketplace interactions and workplace relationships

I think the term kingdom ambassador best embodies all of these behaviors. As Christians, we are citizens of Heaven passing through this world – we are in the world but not of the world. Like diplomats in a faraway land representing their king or government in all they say and do.

Resist the temptation to conform to the secular world and the notion that your faith should be compartmentalized to church on Sundays and your home. Strive to fully integrate your faith with work and all areas of your life.

Let’s scatter well as kingdom ambassadors. And remember, you are representing King Jesus!
