Faith in the Interview Room: Navigating Christ in Corporate Culture

By Rachel Loe, January 15, 2024

There are a lot of very black-and-white instructions in the scriptures. God has blessed us with specifics on what brings glory to His name. There are other areas in our lives where we have the freedom in Christ to use our best judgment, knowing that we will not throw His plan off track.

“This is the purpose that is purposed concerning the whole earth,

and this is the hand that is stretched out over all the nations.

For the Lord of hosts has purposed, and who will annul it?

His hand is stretched out, and who will turn it back?”

Isaiah 14:27 ESV

There is relief in that knowledge, but it can also lead to confusion and stress regarding how we should interact with the world in our workplace. One of these areas is how to talk about our faith with our employers in an interview, or if we should. This is an incredibly weighty topic because we are called to live for Christ out loud. (Romans 14:8; Philippians 1:21). But what does that look like with our employers, specifically during a job interview?  Should we talk about our faith, and if so, how much?

A few things to consider.

Situational Awareness

The position and company you are interviewing for should be a factor. Are you interviewing with a faith-based organization? That makes the conversation more easily navigated.

When you are interviewing with a company that is not faith-based, more discernment is required. If a direct question about faith is asked, then be “prepared with an answer” and rely on the Holy Spirit (1 Peter 3:15-16).  We can also be a witness for the Lord without giving our testimony in every conversation.

When asked about your work ethos or what motivates you, rely on the guiding principles of scripture without having to quote scripture directly. Do everything to the best of your ability and in an honorable way.

Your Heart Posture

Why do you feel hesitant to talk about your faith? This is not an accusatory question but a genuine ask to reflect on what is at the root of your heart in this area. It is intimidating for most people (yours truly included) to talk about their faith with superiors because it is a controversial topic that can cause a person to feel vulnerable. Christ told us it would be so (John 15:18). When people reject our Lord, it feels like they are rejecting us. Remember, dear believer, that our Lord will uphold us through all rejection and persecution. This is not to say go out and purposefully be obnoxious, but do not be afraid when prompted by the Holy Spirit.

This is not a comprehensive how-to since this is such a complex topic. But when we live for our Lord, we can feel peace.  God is delighted when we seek to please Him in everything we do. I will close with one of my favorite verses:

“It is the glory of God to conceal a matter; to search out a matter is the glory of kings. As the heavens are high and the earth is deep, so the hearts of kings are unsearchable” (Proverbs 26:2-3 ESV).
