As Christ-followers, our purpose is to glorify God in all we do.
In 1 Corinthians 10:31, Paul teaches this principle so we may understand that glorifying God should be the impetus of our lives. “Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all things for the glory of God.” (1 Corinthians 10:31 NASB20). Understanding our purpose gives us a base. Thankfully, God provides us with a base and an application for how we can model our purpose in the marketplace. Solomon teaches in Proverbs 12:10 the importance of being diligent in our daily responsibilities – not squandering time but creating fruitfulness through hard work.
Another word for fruitfulness in the marketplace would be profit. If it is God’s will, individuals and corporations may earn a profit. Profit is a gift from God that can be used as another resource or tool to glorify Him and is not to be taken for granted.
When profitability occurs, it can be easy to take the profits we have been given for granted and start taking credit for ourselves rather than continuing to give glory to God. We can then find a false sense of security in ourselves, leading to idolatry, pride, greed, and independence over interdependence. “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth” (Matthew 6:24 NASB20).
Profitability itself is not bad. However, profitability can come from fleshly desires that we must be aware of. The key to this is balance. The way to balance these two gifts of purpose and profit is to intertwine them. If anyone is blessed beyond expense, it is important to seek where we can honor God with the gifts he has provided. Three biblical examples of how we can use our profitability are tithing, Leviticus 27: 30-34, giving, 2 Corinthians 9:6, and staying out of debt, Luke 14:26.
Though it can be hard to give up our treasures, my encouragement to you is to seek God’s counsel over your personal and business financials to glorify him and further his kingdom.
