WHO ARE YOU? PART 3

Who are you in Christ?

People struggle with the question of their identity. Unsatisfying answers are commonly sought in vocational success, relationships, money, possessions, knowledge, power, and even sexual orientation. For the Christian, we can find a satisfying identity in God.

Through Jesus, we are God’s workmanship, His work of art, made for doing good in the world.  As Paul explained to the Ephesians, “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them” (Ephesians 2:10 NASB20).  As God’s handiwork and artwork, we have tremendous value and bring that value with us wherever we go, especially to our places of work.

Understanding the truth of our position relative to God can empower us to live in a way that demonstrates the truth of our position. We can fulfil our God-given purpose and His plan for our lives.

In the past, I struggled in the area of identity. I was affected by what the world said I was as a black man. I remember feeling inferior. But as I learned who I was in Christ, it changed how I saw myself, how I saw others, and how others saw me. Jesus changes everything!

Our hope is in Christ and Christ alone! In this life, my hope is in Christ.  My identity may be found in Christ.  I have found that the lyrics of the song “In Christ Alone,” by Adrienne Camp and Geoff Moore & the Distance, express the truth about my position relative to God made possible through the work of Jesus Christ.

In Christ alone, my hope is found
He is my light, my strength, my song
This Cornerstone, this solid ground
Firm through the fiercest drought and storm
What heights of love, what depths of peace
When fears are stilled, when strivings cease
My Comforter, my All in All
Here in the love of Christ I stand

In Christ alone, who took on flesh
Fullness of God in helpless babe
This gift of love and righteousness
Scorned by the ones He came to save
‘Til on that cross as Jesus died
The wrath of God was satisfied
For every sin on Him was laid
Here in the death of Christ I live, I live.
