Money and Marriage: Building a strong foundation together

Congratulations, you are a newlywed! Or, you have been married for a long time. Biblically, the construct of unity in a marriage is the same. Unity is foundational in marriage. Couples should approach financial decisions as a team, ensuring both partners have a voice in budgeting, spending, and saving. This promotes harmony and prevents conflicts that arise from financial misunderstandings.

With that being said, we can undoubtedly use biblical principles to guide wisdom in financial decisions. Proverbs gives guidance to stay out of debt, Proverbs 22:7, think long-term as to not be shortsighted, Proverbs 22:3, and living within our means, Proverbs 21:20.

One of the best ways to get started is creating a list of values that you and your spouse hold. This could be as easy as three to five items. These should be values that you want not just your money but your life to revolve around. Below is a list of potential shared values to get started:

  • Faith
  • Family
  • Health and wellness
  • Financial security and stability
  • Community service and volunteerism
  • Deep and meaningful friendships
  • Work-life balance
  • Fulfilling and purposeful work

By identifying and embracing these shared values, you and your spouse can make more informed and cohesive financial decisions. These values will guide your spending, saving, and investing habits, ensuring that your financial choices reflect your mutual goals and priorities.

In addition to setting values, consider these practical steps:

  • Regular Financial Meetings: Schedule regular discussions to review your budget, track expenses, and adjust your financial plans as needed. Proverbs 27.23
  • Set Joint Financial Goals: Define both short-term and long-term goals, such as saving for a home, retirement, or a family vacation. Ensure these goals align with your shared values. Ecclesiastes 4:9-12
  • Create a Budget: Develop a comprehensive budget that includes all sources of income and expenses. Stick to this budget to avoid unnecessary debt. Luke 16:11
  • Build an Emergency Fund: Save three to six months’ worth of living expenses to cover unexpected financial challenges. Genesis 41:34-36
  • Seek Counsel: When faced with significant financial decisions, seek advice from trusted mentors, financial advisors, or even through prayer and scripture study. Proverbs 15:22

Remember, financial unity in marriage is not just about managing money but about growing together in trust, communication, and mutual respect. By following biblical principles and aligning your financial practices with your shared values, you can build a strong, and financially stable marriage.
