While our salvation is not based on good deeds or tithing, it plays an essential role in our walk with Christ. God has given us all gifts and abilities that can be used to benefit those around us. The Apostle Paul describes this well in Romans. “However, since we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, each of us is to use them properly: if prophecy, in proportion to one’s faith; if service, in the act of serving; or the one who teaches, in the act of teaching; or the one who exhorts, in the work of exhortation; the one who gives, with generosity; the one who is in leadership, with diligence; the one who shows mercy, with cheerfulness” (Romans 12:6-8).
It is necessary to delineate that money is not the only treasure God has blessed us with that can help organizations and communities. When shared, these skills and abilities can profoundly impact, often more significant than monetary donations. This kind of giving, known as an in-kind contribution in the nonprofit world, can bring transformative change.
In-kind donations are contributions of goods or services, rather than cash, to a non-profit organization. These donations can include a wide range of items and services, such as:
- Goods: Physical items like clothing, food, medical supplies, office equipment, furniture, and technology.
- Services: Professional services like legal advice, marketing support, IT services, and consulting.
- Volunteer Time: The time and effort volunteers contribute, including skilled labor or general assistance.
These are significant contributions for non-profits to receive for the following reasons:
- Cost Savings: Nonprofits can save money by receiving goods and services they would otherwise have to purchase, allowing them to allocate more financial resources directly to their programs and initiatives.
- Expanded Capabilities: Access to donated goods and professional services can enhance a non-profit’s effective program delivery. Donated technology can improve operational efficiency, and pro bono legal services can help navigate complex legal issues.
- Community Engagement: In-kind donations allow businesses and individuals to support a non-profit meaningfully. This can strengthen relationships with the community and foster a sense of shared purpose and commitment.
- Resource Diversification: Relying on a mix of cash and in-kind donations can provide a more stable and resilient funding base. In-kind contributions act as a buffer when cash donations are low.
- Increased Awareness: Receiving in-kind donations from businesses can increase the non-profit’s visibility and awareness, potentially attracting more donors and supporters.
- Enhanced Programs: Specific in-kind donations can directly improve the quality and scope of a non-profit’s services. For example, donated books can expand a literacy program or medical supplies can improve healthcare services.
This week, I have an ask. Please do not underestimate the gifts God has given you, even if your skills don’t fit into a traditional ministry role. You have been endowed with gifts to advance the kingdom’s mission. I may be biased, but I genuinely believe the non-profit I serve at, Bridging in Minnesota, has the best finance committee and board of directors. They generously give their time and resources and pour into our team by asking insightful questions and sharing the knowledge they’ve accumulated over the years. You, too, could serve in these ways, becoming an immeasurable blessing to others.
